KL2 Alumna, Lisa Torres, Awarded K23 Grant From the National Institute of General Medical Sciences

Congratulations to CTSC KL2 Scholar and Master's degree alumna, Dr. Lisa Torres, MD, MS, on being awarded the K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)! This award will fund Dr. Torres's research "Cellular and Metabolic Dysfunction in Sepsis-Induced Immune Paralysis" with almost $600,000 over 3 years. Dr. Torres says her work with the CTSC on the KL2 Scholar award was integral to securing her K23 award.

Dr. Torres was appointed a KL2 Scholar in 2020 and received her Master's degree in 2020 where her research focused on "Leukocyte Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Sepsis-Induced Immune Paralysis". During her KL2 and Master's training, Dr. Torres's mentoring team included Dr. Augustine Choi, MD of Weill Cornell Medicine and Dr. Martin Wells, PhD of Cornell University. 

Dr. Torres is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Assistant Attending Physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. 

The Master's Degree in Clinical Translational Investigation combines rigorous academics and strategic, practical skills, challenging students to apply scientific theory, concepts, methods, and innovative, team-oriented management to help solve complex biomedical and health issues.

The CTSC KL2 Career Development Core Program supports junior faculty and senior residents and fellows by providing salary support, protected time, advanced degree training, and practical skills necessary to conduct interdisciplinary Clinical Translational Investigation within a team research environment.
