CTSC Trainees and Scholars Awarded Dean's Diversity and Healthcare Disparity Research Award

The CTSC is immensely proud of all 6 of our KL2 Scholars and TL1 Trainees on receiving, for 2 consecutive years, the Dean’s Diversity and Healthcare Disparity Research Award funded by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Weill Cornell Medicine. The 2020 CTSC recipients were awarded in the Faculty and Fellow and Postdoctoral Associate categories: KL2 Scholar Arnab Ghosh, KL2 Scholar Ayana Morales, TL1 Trainee John Keefe, and TL1 Trainee Alumni Ishani Premaratne. TL1 Trainee Alumni Kiel Telesford, PhD, MS and Keith Chadwick, MD, MS, Masters in Clinical and Translational Investigation Alumni, were awarded in 2019.

Dr.  Arnab Ghosh has been able to further his KL2 research investigating "Social factors within healthcare that are a direct result of healthcare disparities based on racial and socioeconomic statuses." Dr. Ghosh, an Assistant Professor of internal medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, was awarded the KL2 Career Development Award in 2019.  His mentors include Said Ibrahim, MD, MPH, the Vice Chair for Strategy and Development for Healthcare Policy and Research at WCM; Martin Wells, PhD, A Professor in Statistical Sciences at Cornell, Ithaca; and Jessica Ancker, PhD, MPH, an Associate Professor for Healthcare Policy and Research at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Ayana Morales, Dean Diversity awardee in 2020, KL2 Scholar, is furthering her research on "Molecular mechanisms of Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) oncogenesis." Dr. Morales was awarded the KL2 this year while working as an Instructor for infectious diseases at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her mentors include Ethel Cesarman, MD, PhD, an Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, and Mark A. Dickson, MD, an Assistant Attending Physician at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Jack Keefe, a current TL1 trainee, will be able to continue his research with this award on "Personalized medicine for Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder." He is a postdoctoral fellow of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine. His mentors include Barbara Milrod, MD, a Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, Cory Chen, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor at Manhattan VA Medical center, and Jun Mao, MD, Service Chief of Integrative Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Ishani Premaratne, a TL1 Trainee Alumni (May '20), was awarded the Dean's Diversity award in 2020. She began new research on the "Impact of an Academic Relative Value Unit (aRVU) System on Gender-Based Differences in Surgery Faculty Compensation and Academic Productivity." While funded through the CTSC she was able to cultivate her skills through the Advanced Certificate program researching "Breast Implant-Associated ALCL in Three-Dimensional Biomimetic Platform ." Her mentors included Jason A. Spector, MD,  Professor of Surgery (Plastic Surgery) and Otolaryngology, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Giorgio Inghirami, MD, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Kiel Telesford. TL1 Trainee Alumni (December '19), worked on "Determining the Immunological Basis of Multiple Sclerosis Severity in African Americans" while funded by this award in 2019. Dr. Telesford received his Masters in Clinical and Translational Investigation with the CTSC and focus on his research. His mentors included Timothy Vartanian, MD, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience, Weill Cornell Medicine; and Christopher Mason, MS, PhD, Associate Professor of Computational Genomics, Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Keith Chadwick, Masters Degree Alumni (May '20), received fundung from the Dean's Diversity Award in 2019, this gave him the opportunity to continue his research on the "Efficacy of OR versus office-based management of benign vocal fold lesions." Dr. Chadwick is currently a Sean Parker Fellow in Laryngology, Sean Parker Institute for the Voice, Weill Cornell Medical. His mentorrs included Lucian Silica, Professor/Director, Sean Parker Institute for the Voice; Joel Erblich, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor, Weill Cornell Medicine; and Katerina Andreadis, MS, research Project Manager, Weill Cornell Medicine.

The CTSC KL2 Career Development Core Program supports junior faculty and senior residents and fellows by providing salary support, protected time, advanced degree training, and practical skills necessary to conduct interdisciplinary Clinical Translational Investigation within a team research environment.

The CTSC TL1 Training Core Program supports early career development among pre- and early post-doctoral trainees by providing salary support, protected time, advanced degree training and practical skills necessary to conduct interdisciplinary Clinical and Translational Investigation in a team research environment.

The Master's Degree in Clinical Translational Investigation combines rigorous academics and strategic, practical skills, challenging students to apply scientific theory, concepts, methods, and innovative, team-oriented management to help solve complex biomedical and health issues.
