CTSC MS Candidate Recently Published in Diabetes Care and Presenting at Obesity Society Annual Meeting
Master's Degree in Clinical and Translational Investigation candidate, Catherine Thomas' research showing carbohydrates consumed after proteins and fats have a less dramatic effect on blood sugar and insulin levels of patients with type 2 diabetes than when eaten beforehand was recently published in Diabetes Care. This finding offers patients a relatively easy-to-implement dietary modification. Read more about Catherine's publication on the CTSC blog. On November 5, Catherine will present her research at the upcoming Obesity Society's annual scientific meeting.
CTSC TL1 Trainees Awarded Independent Funding
The CTSC TL1 Training Award program mission is to spark interest among pre/post-doctoral trainees in interdisciplinary Clinical and Translational (C/T) Investigation in the team research environment. We want to congratulate our two TL1 Trainees, Megan Bourassa, PhD, and Brandon Carney, BA, for achieving independent funding:
- Megan Bourassa, PhD, Neuroscience Postdoctoral Fellow, Burke Medical Research Institute, was awarded an F32 by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for her project, "Identify Short Chain Fatty Acid Based Therapeutics Optimal for Treating Neurodegeneration: Pharmacological, Nutriceutical and Nutritional Approaches."
- Brandon Carney, BA, Chemistry Graduate Student, Hunter College, was awarded a TOW Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship by the Center for Molecular Imaging and Nanobiotechnology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

October 3: CTSC & Animal Medical Center One Health Conference
The CTSC and the Animal Medical Center present One Health Conference, addressing a comparative approach to human and veterinary cancer care.
Featured speakers will be from Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, NewYork Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, NYU Langone Medical Center, Colorado State University, Washington State University, and the Animal Medical Center.
This event will be held in the Belfer Research Building (413 E. 69th Street), room 302-A/B/C, from 8:00am - 6:00pm. Please contact Lauren Klingler at the Animal Medical Center at lauren.klingler@amcny.org to register.
November 4: Science of Team Science Lecture by William Trochim
CTSC Director of Evaluation and Professor of Policy Analysis & Management at Cornell, Ithaca, William Trochim, PhD, MA, will give a lecture titled, "More Than the Sum of the Parts: Introduction to the Science of Team Science," on Wednesday, November 4, from 12:30 - 2:00pm at The Griffis Faculty Club. Dr. Trochim developed the concept mapping methodology used to “map” the key research issues in the new field of team science. This seminar is designed both to introduce the research in an exciting new area of study called the Science of Team Science (SciTS) and to provide resources for students and faculty engaged in collaborative research efforts.

September 29: Finding and Navigating Mentoring
On Tuesday, September 29, the CTSC hosted a workshop titled, Finding and Navigating Mentoring: How to Find an Effective Mentor, which provided insight into the process of identifying potential mentors through a combination of presentations and interactive activities. The presentation and discussion covered topics such as finding mentors outside of your institution, how to work with a mentor, how to be an effective mentee and what an effective mentor is. Attendees signed up for one-on-one consultation with the guest speakers after the presentations. Applicants to one of the CTSC Education and Training Award Programs were encouraged to attend. This workshop was held from 8:45am - 2:00pm in The Griffis Faculty Club.
Highlights from Spring/Summer 2015
CTSC New Student Orientation
This year's New Student Orientation was held on Thursday, August 6, in the Belfer Research Building (413 E. 69th Street). During the luncheon, the CTSC welcomed its newest class of students to the CTSC family. Dr. Julianne Imperato-McGinley, the Program Director, shared the history of the Education Program, and Dr. Marshall Glesby, Director of the Clinical and Translational Resource Unit, presented on the research support services available to CTSC trainees. Lunch was served followed by a networking session with CTSC Education Program Directors, faculty, and staff.
Weill Cornell CTSC Concluded Popular Biodesign and Creativity Course
This past spring, the Weill Cornell CTSC invited students, fellows, and faculty to participate in a new Biodesign and Creativity Course for Medical Drug and Device Design. The eight-session course, led by Akhilesh Sista, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell and Assistant Attending Radiologist of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Campus, gave students a systematic overview of topics such as medical device regulations, reimbursement considerations, and intellectual property, focusing on how to take a biomedical invention forward from early concept to technology translation.
