CTEP Alumnus, Marco Seandel, MD, PhD, recipient of 2013 NIH Director's New Innovator Award
Congratulations to the CTSC's Clinical Research Methodology Curriculum (CRMC) graduate, Dr. Marco Seandel, Assistant Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology and Surgery at WCMC, who has been awarded one of the NIH Director's New Innovator Awards for his project titled, "Clonal competition in stem cells as a driver of paternal age effect diseases." Dr. Seandel was also the recipient of a CTSC Pilot Award in 2006 on "Vascular Endothelium and Chemotherapy Resistance in Urothelial Cancer." Read more about Dr. Seandel's award here.

CTEP Mentor, Dr. Shahin Rafii, Lead Investigator in Study Showing Blood Vessel Cells Stimulate Organ Repair and Regeneration
In a manner greatly less invasive than organ transplantation, Dr. Rafii and his team found that damaged organs can be restored via the injection of blood vessel cells. Dr. Rafii is a genetic medicine professor, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and co-director of the WCMC Ansary Stem Cell Institute and the Tri-SCI Stem Center. Read more here.

2014 Combined Annual Meeting of CSCTR and MWAFMR: Call for Abstracts
In one of the few available platforms for experts from different medical specialties to exchange information about their research techniques, the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research (CSCTR) and the Midwest Section of the American Federation for Medical Research (MWAFMR) are hosting the 2014 Combined Annual Meeting and invite you to submit an abstract on the online submission site. Welcomed abstracts are those with a clinical focus in any of a wide variety of categories, such as: cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonary and critical care, hematology and oncology, endocrinology, nephrology, infectious disease, allergy, or healthcare research, clinical epidemiology and quality improvement. The early submission deadline is Monday, December 30th (11:59pm). The annual meeting will be held on April 24-25, 2014 in Chicago. 

The Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) Workshop on the Phases of Grant Writing: Preparing Successful Grant Applications
Dr. Steven Kaminsky of the International Rett Syndrome Foundation will be presenting on Grant Writing. His previous experience with the subject includes presenting for the NIH's Bio-Trac Workshops. Please reserve your seat and join us on November 20, 2013 at 1300 York Avenue (at 69th Street), from 2:00 - 3:30pm.

 

Weill Cornell CTSC and MSKCC Present One-Day Long Symposium on: Conducting Clinical Investigations in the Modern Era
Join the Weill Cornell Clinical & Translational Science Center (CTSC) and partner institution Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) at a day-long conference titled, "Conducting Clinical Investigations in the Modern Era: Ethical Conduct, Regulations Involving Human Subject Research, Data Management, Reporting Responsibilities, and Institutional and Cooperative Group Oversight," on Monday, October 28th, from 9:00am - 4:30pm at 1275 York Avenue. Comparative Effectiveness Research in New York City: Conference
The Weill Cornell CTSC, in conjunction with Mount Sinai and Albert Einstein's institutes for clinical and translational science, is sponsoring a conference to bring together experts interested in comparative effectiveness research and methods of fostering inter-institutional collaborations on Monday, October 28th, from 8:00am - 12:30pm. The event will be held at the Icahn Medical Institute, 1425 Madison Avenue. Dr. Susan Horn, Senior Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research in Salt Lake City, will give the Keynote Address and her topic will be on, "Practice-Based Evidence Research: An Alternative to Randomized Controlled Trials and Traditional Observational Studies." Multicultural Approaches to Community Health: Course Available for Registration
This course will provide an overview of cultural diversity and its impact on the development and implementation of health promotion policies, programs, and health services research. Students will learn how to recognize human differences, identify their own biases, and foster the development of awareness, sensitivity, knowledge, and skills required to implement effective health promotion and disease prevention care for culturally diverse populations.  The use of qualitative research in understanding cultural differences will also be explored.  At the end of the course, students will be able to understand how cultural differences impact their research. All are welcome to participate for credit. Registration is required. Register by November 1st by emailing ctsc_k30@med.cornell.edu. Laura Robbins, DSW, CSW, MSW will hold sessions Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm on the following dates:
11/18, 11/25, 12/3, 12/5, 12/10, 12/12, 12/17, 12/19.

 

Deadlines

October 25, 2013: Fall 2013 Progress Reports
On October 8th, active trainees received an email invitation with instructions on submitting a Progress Report electronically via the CTSC Progress Reporting and Outcomes Measurement Promoting Translational Research (PROMPTR) system, which are due by October 25, 2013. Trainees were instructed to meet with their mentors to draft their report. Second year students are asked to develop a research plan. After submission of the Progress Report, students will meet with their APDs to discuss their progress, research program and research plans. 

 

October 31, 2013: Pre-Proposal Due Date for The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation 2014 Clinical Scientist Development Award Competition
Selected junior physician scientists will receive a grant facilitating their transition into independent clinical researchers. Pre-proposals may be about clinical research in any disease area; experiments using animals or primary tissues derived from animals are not eligible for consideration under Doris Duke's guidelines. Pre-proposals are due by October 31, 2013. For details about applicant eligibility and application instructions please visit their Clinical Scientist Development Award website.
