News and Congratulations

Congratulations to Dr. Marianne Nellis, MD, MS on being a co-recipient with Dr. Oliver Karam, MD, PhD, of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) R34 Award!

In a first of its kind pilot study, the ECmo hemoSTAtic Transfusions In Children (ECSTATIC), will be funded over 3 years with almost $900,000. Dr. Nellis says "the Masters Program offered through the CTSC was essential in my development as a clinical researcher. I was taught how to ask research questions and design studies to answer the questions effectively, a skill that on the surface seems easy, but is truly quite complex. In addition, the teaching from Dr. Glesby on the ins and outs of conducting a clinical trial were invaluable."

The R34 mechanism is specifically designed to allow investigators to collect information needed to enhance the quality of the trial design and the likelihood of successful launch and completion.

Dr. Nellis received her Master's degree in 2014 where her research focused on "The Use of Simulation to Improve Resident Communication and Personal Experience at End-of-Life Care". During her Master's training, Dr. Nellis's mentoring team included Dr. Joyce Griffin-Sobel, PhD of Helene Fuld College of Nursing (formerly of Weill Cornell Medicine) and Dr. Carma Bylund, PhD of University of Florida College of Medicine (formerly of Weill Cornell Medicine).

Since graduating from the CTSC MS program, Dr. Nellis has been an active alumna, generous with her time to share her research experiences with current students and steadfast in her commitment to help with recruit the next generation of clinical and translational trainees.

Dr. Nellis is currently the John D. & Lili R. Bussel, M.D. Associate Professor in Pediatric Hematology at Weill Cornell Medicine, an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, and an Associate Attending Pediatrician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The Master's Degree in Clinical Translational Investigation combines rigorous academics and strategic, practical skills, challenging students to apply scientific theory, concepts, methods, and innovative, team-oriented management to help solve complex biomedical and health issues.
