News and Congratulations

Congratulations to CTSC TL1 Trainee, Anna Vaeth, for winning second place for the best abstract at the William Schnaper Visiting Scientist (WSVS) Fall 2024 Mini-Symposium

The mini-symposium, hosted by the TL1/T32/R25 Directors Group and Georgetown-Howard Center for Clinical & Translational Science (GHUCCTS), is a national platform for trainees to present and showcase their research and receive valuable feedback from peers and faculty from across CTSA institutions.

Anna's presentation titled, "The Use of Ultrasound in Detecting Neuromas in Amputees with Osseointegrated Prostheses," highlighted the ability to address unmet needs by applying innovation and adaptability to a clinical research project. Anna's achievement in securing second place is a testament to her research innovation, hard work, and science communications skills.

As a first-year TL1 trainee, Anna’s research focuses on analyzing outcomes in patients with osseointegrated implants which allowed her to understand the unique needs of amputee patients. Anna is a first year TL1 Trainee, expected to graduate from medical training in 2026. Her primary mentor on the TL1 study is David Otterburn, MD, FACS at Weill Cornell Medicine and secondary mentors are Paul Christos, DrPH, MS, WCM and Ogonna Nwawka, MD, Hospital for Special Surgery. She is a Weill Cornell Medical student taking an extended curriculum year of research and is expected to graduate from medical training in 2026.

The goal of the CTSC TL1 Training Award is to support career development among pre- and early post-doctoral trainees near the beginning of their careers by providing rigorous training and mentoring to conduct translational team research across disciplines and institutions.
