CTEP Mentor, Dr. Mark Souweidane, is awarded the 2013 Cristian Rivera Foundation Vision of Hope Award
Dr. Souweidane, who served as mentor to 2013 CTEP Summer Fellow, Ranjodh Singh, was awarded the 2013 Cristian Rivera Foundation Vision of Hope Award for his work helping pediatric patients suffering from diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas. Read more about Dr. Souweidane's award here.
Successful Clinical Trial for Prostate Cancer Drug Performed by CTEP Alumnus, Dr. Scott Tagawa (2010)
The drug tested by Dr. Tagawa and his team at the Weill Cornell CTSC allows patients with prostate cancer to outlive their expected survival times. Read more about Dr. Tagawa's work on this clinical trial here.
CTEP Mentor, Dr. Madhu Mazumdar, is welcomed to the International Indian Statistical Association
Dr. Mazumdar, director of the CTSC Research Design and Biostatistics Core and CTEP mentor to Victoria Blinder (2008), has been invited to serve the International Indian Statistical Association on their Young Researcher Award Committee which aims to foster the exchange of knowledge among researchers and educators in the field of Statistics. CTEP Alumna, Dr. Kristen Marks, serving on the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases National Guidelines Panel
Dr. Marks, an alumna (2009) of the CTSC Masters in Clinical and Translational Investigation Program, was named as member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases which is dedicated to supporting physicians and scientists specializing in liver disease. CTEP REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
The Clinical and Translational Education Program (CTEP) is offering three Request for Applications (RFAs):
1) CTSC KL2 Scholars Award – up to $80,000 per year & $12,000 research related (2 years) – provides post-doctorates protected time to pursue advanced training and skills to conduct independent multidisciplinary C/T research in a team environment. Scholars pursue research at 75% protected time (50% for surgeons). More information here.
2) CTSC TL1 Training Award – up to $27,232 per year (pre-docs), up to $62,030 per year (post-docs) (2 years) – supports early pre/post-doc career development; provides advanced training & skills to conduct interdisciplinary C/T investigation in a team environment. TL1 Trainees pursue research training at 100% time and effort. More information here.
3) Master’s Degree in Clinical and Translational Investigation and Advanced Certificate in Clinical and Translational Investigation. More information here: Masters Degree & Advanced Certificate.

CTSC TRAVEL AWARDS to Present Abstract at Translational Science National Conference
CTSC is sponsoring Travel Awards for scholars and trainees to present at the 2014 Translational Science Conference in Washington, DC on April 9-11, 2014.
Eligibility is dependent upon having your abstract accepted for poster or oral presentation. The CTSC Travel Award will cover the conference registration fee, travel, 2 nights room and board, and poster printing cost, award total up to $1000 per trainee/scholar
Deadline to submit your abstract: Wednesday, January 29, 2014.

Translational Science 2014 is a national conference bringing together all of the disciplines involved in clinical and translational research for the shared benefits of networking and education. It also offers a variety of ways for young investigators to share their experiences, challenges, and fresh approaches with professionals from around the country and gain visibility at the national level.
CTSC Research in Progress Luncheon on Friday, November 22, 2013
The next luncheon will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013, from 12:30-1:30pm, in the Payson Solarium (P-224) and hosted by Dr. Suzanne Maher, PhD, Hospital of Special Surgery. The luncheons, hosted by CTSC faculty, feature student presentations of their research progress.
Featured presenters are:
- Damon Love, PhD, CTSC TL1 Trainee, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, WCMC. Dr. Love will be presenting on his TL1 research: An RNAi Strategy for Targeting Oncogenic β-catenin in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
- Babak Navi, MD, CTSC KL2 Scholar, Assistant Professor, Stroke and Critical Care Program, Department of Neurology, WCMC. Dr. Navi will be presenting on his KL2 research: Enoxaparin versus Aspirin in Patients with Cancer and Stroke.
- Marianne Nellis, MD, CTSC Master's Degree Candidate, Fellow, Pediatric Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics, WCMC. Dr. Nellis will be presenting on her MS research: The Use of Simulation to Improve Resident Communication and Personal Experience at End-of-Life Care.
- Mark Stasiak, ME, CTSC TL1 Trainee, Assistant Research Engineer, Department of Biomechanical Engineering, HSS. Mr. Stasiak will be presenting on his TL1 research: Validation of a device to evaluate rehabilitation protocol effect on ACL repair.

CTSC's Multicultural Approaches to Community Health: Course Available for Registration
This course, offered by the CTSC, will provide an overview of cultural diversity and its impact on the development and implementation of health promotion policies, programs, and health services research. Students will learn how to recognize human differences, identify their own biases, and foster the development of awareness, sensitivity, knowledge, and skills required to implement effective health promotion and disease prevention care for culturally diverse populations. The use of qualitative research in understanding cultural differences will also be explored. At the end of the course, students will be able to understand how cultural differences impact their research. All are welcome to participate for credit. Registration is required. The Tri-Institutional Collaboration Network (TCN) Workshop on the Phases of Grant Writing: Preparing Successful Grant Applications
Dr. Steven Kaminsky of the International Rett Syndrome Foundation will be presenting on Grant Writing. His previous experience with the subject includes presenting for the NIH's Bio-Trac Workshops. CTSC Application Walk-In Clinic on Wednesday, December 11, 2013
The Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) is holding an application clinic to answer questions related to the 2014 Education & Training Awards Request for Applications (RFA). This clinic will provide consultation and advice related to the RFA process, submitting an application using the electronic Protocol Authoring and Review system (ePAR), and how to request CTSC resources and services related to your Education awards. The application clinic will be held on Wednesday, December 11th, from 12:30-1:30pm in the Payson Solarium, 525 East 68th Street, 2nd floor of the Payson Building (Room P224).
CTSC's 2013-2014 Clinical Research Methodology Program
The Clinical Research Methodology Program presents day-long symposia on topics including: grant writing and protocol development, biostatistics, drug and medical device development, clinical trials design as well as relevant issues in clinical investigation. The next all-day symposium at MSKCC is Monday, January 6, 2013 and is titled, "Clinical Trials Design: Phase O, I, II, III Trials, Integrating Biological Correlates."
